ABOUT CLIMART ACTION

Student Leadership for Climate Action!

Climart Africa is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Kenya, dedicated to fostering student leadership in climate action. Through non-academic scholarships and leadership training, we empower students from low-income backgrounds to drive meaningful environmental change.

THE CLIMATE CRISIS

Despite contributing less than 4% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Africa faces severe climate change impacts, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, droughts, and floods, which threaten agriculture, water resources, infrastructure, and public health.

01.
Youth Awareness Gap in Climate Action
In Kenya, research by Prof. Julius Huho (as cited in Murikira, 2022) revealed that 60.5% of university students were unaware of the country’s National Climate Action Plan. This shows a critical challenge: young people, who are most vulnerable to climate change and key to driving solutions, often lack access to climate policy knowledge, leadership training, and platforms for engagement.
02.
No Integration of Climate Education in Kenya’s Curriculum
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, yet Kenya’s formal education system has not fully integrated climate change into the national curriculum. While environmental studies are briefly covered in some subjects, there is no dedicated climate education that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address the climate crisis.
03.
Lack of Climate Education in African Classrooms
Across Africa, the absence of structured climate change education in classrooms is a growing concern. While the continent is one of the regions most affected by climate change—facing prolonged droughts, devastating floods, rising food insecurity, and biodiversity loss—millions of students graduate each year without a clear understanding of the climate crisis or their role in addressing it.
04.
Learning Gaps Delay Africa’s Environmental Response
Education is one of the most powerful tools for solving global challenges. Yet in many parts of Africa, poor learning outcomes continue to limit the ability of students to contribute to sustainable development. According to the World Bank, millions of young people leave school without the foundational skills needed for problem-solving, innovation, and leadership.
